Virginia Tech

Agroecosystem Modeling Lab

Opportunities

We welcome students and researchers who are interested in agroecosystem modeling, data science, agricultural management, climate extremes, and environmental sustainability.

PhD Students

The Agroecosystem Modeling Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking one highly motivated PhD student to develop and apply process-based agroecosystem models to investigate how management practices (e.g., irrigation, cover cropping, tillage, and rotation) interact with environmental factors to shape agricultural productivity, soil health, and environmental outcomes (e.g., carbon, water, and nutrient dynamics).

Research topics will be tailored to the student’s background and interests and aligned with ongoing projects in the lab. This position is supported through a fully funded graduate research assistantship (tuition, stipend, and benefits), with an anticipated start date in Spring or Fall 2027.

Background that is helpful

  • Experience with process-based ecosystem or crop models (e.g., APSIM, DSSAT, DNDC)
  • Programming experience (e.g., Python, R, C++, MATLAB)
  • Interest or experience in geospatial datasets and environmental data analysis
  • Relevant academic background (e.g., agroecology, soil science, agronomy, hydrology, remote sensing, or related fields)
  • Additional experience in AI, high-performance computing, or data assimilation is a plus
  • For international applicants, Virginia Tech graduate admissions may require proof of English proficiency (e.g., TOEFL or IELTS)

Postdoctoral Researchers

Please contact Dr. You directly to inquire about postdoctoral opportunities in the lab. Prospective postdocs may also consider the Virginia Tech Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship . We are also happy to discuss external postdoctoral fellowship applications with strong candidates whose interests align with the lab.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students interested in research are welcome to contact Dr. You directly to inquire about opportunities. Projects may involve modeling, data science, geospatial analysis, or related tasks.
